HISTORY HAS SHOWN:
Vulnerable children + crisis = increased risk of family separation...
…. leading to more children in
institutions
Vulnerable children + crisis + systems that support
families = increased likelihood of children remaining in families...
…. where they belong
During a global crisis such as COVID-19, there is a heightened necessity to recognise and respond to the protection of children.
Even during this crisis placing a child into residential care should always only be used as a last resort and as a temporary solution.
THE SOLUTIONS
HOW YOU CAN HELP FAMILIES
SUPPORT FAMILY STRENGTHENING PROJECTS:
Due to the temporary and long-term impacts of COVD-19, vulnerable families should not be separated but should instead be given additional support so they can stay together. This may include providing food relief, rent stipends and supporting home education costs.
SUPPORT FAMILY-BASED
ALTERNATIVE CARE PROVIDERS:
It can be expected that the number of children in need of alternative care will increase, therefore family-based alternative care providers will need support to meet this increase in demand when many services are struggling to work within government restrictions.
ADVOCATE FOR GOOD PRACTICE:
Donors have a critical role to play in advocating for the right of children to grow up in families and supporting organisations who prioritise family-based care for vulnerable children. The public can also campaign to see governments prioritising family based solutions.
